General description of for adrenal gland disorders, Cushing's Syndrome, Addison's disease, adrenal fatigue, adrenal virilism, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia

The adrenal glands are the part of the body responsible for releasing three different classes of hormones (more than 50 in totality). These hormones control many important functions in the body, such as:

  • Maintaining metabolic processes, such as managing blood sugar levels and regulating inflammation

  • Regulating the balance of salt and water

  • Controlling the "fight or flight" response to stress

  • Maintaining pregnancy

  • Initiating and controlling sexual maturation during childhood and puberty

The adrenal glands are also an important source of sex steroids, such as estrogen and testosterone.

Maybe this helps explain why, when your adrenal reserves are depleted, you might feel a little crazy, and your sleeping and eating habits seem a little crazy, too! In Ayurvedic medicine, the adrenal glands are connected to the “root” chakra and contribute to our groundedness, nourishment and physical health. With persistent stress, we become increasingly less grounded, which can increase stress even more — and the constant demand for stress hormones means the adrenals become depleted and ultimately exhausted.

Hence, it is imperative for you to take care of your adrenals anyway, and if you have a disorder of these glands, then you are anyway left with no choice but to take extreme good care of them. Holistic and natural remedies can be highly effective in addressing the symptoms of the adrenal gland health disorder as well as the individual’s overall health and wellbeing.

More about adrenal glands

Each of the adrenal glands is about 40 mm long and triangular in shape, and perches on one of the kidneys. Each is really two glands in one – a small inner portion called the medulla (commonly called adrenal medulla), and a larger outer portion called the cortex, and each portion produces different hormones.

The medulla makes two hormones: 80 percent of its output is adrenaline (also known as epinephrine), and the rest is noradrenaline (norepinephrine). These flood into the bloodstream in increased amounts when you are angry or afraid, and prepare you to deal with stress and other emergencies. Adrenaline increases the heart rate and opens the air passages. Noradrenaline increase both the heartbeat and blood pressure. Both dilate the pupils and make the hair stand on end.

The adrenal cortex, which makes up 85 percent of the gland, produces three types of hormones. One group, the glucocorticoids, affects the metabolism of carbohydrates, increasing the sugar level in the blood and the storage of glycogen in the liver. They also stimulate the breakdown of proteins, suppress the immune system, and reduce inflammation. Hydrocortisone (cortisol) is the most important of the glucocorticoids.

A second group of hormones, called the mineralocorticoids, help to regulate the mineral balance of the body. They cause the kidneys to guard sodium and excrete potassium, thus retaining body fluids and raising blood pressure. Aldosterone is the most important of the mineralocorticoids.

The third group of hormones generated by the adrenal cortex is sex hormones. While most sex hormones are produced by the sex glands (ovaries and testes), the adrenals manufacture androgens, and small amounts of estrogens.

What are adrenal gland disorders? for adrenal gland disorders, Cushing's Syndrome, Addison's disease, adrenal fatigue, adrenal virilism, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia

Adrenal gland disorders occur when the adrenal glands don’t work properly.  Sometimes, the cause is a problem in another gland that helps to regulate the adrenal gland.  In other cases, the adrenal gland itself may have the problem.  The NICHD conducts and supports research on many adrenal gland disorders.  Some examples include:

  • Adrenal fatigue - Science tells us that if you experience stress on a chronic basis, these tiny adrenal glands that moderate your stress response and balance many other hormones in your body will suffer. As the adrenal glands become increasingly compromised, you end up with excess abdominal weight, decreased immunity, lack of concentration, irritability, disrupted sleep, and ultimately, pure exhaustion. But the upside is: adrenal fatigue can be prevented and reversed.

    Did you know?

If you suffer from adrenal fatigue, which means the ability of your adrenal glands to carry out their normal functions has decreased, usually due to over stimulation, you may also tend to be hypoglycemic.

  • Cushing's Syndrome - Cushing’s syndrome happens when a person’s body is exposed to too much of the hormone cortisol. In this syndrome, a person’s body makes more cortisol than it needs. Excess hydrocortisone is usually the result of long-term treatment with cortisone like drug. Sometimes, adrenal cortex tumors can cause the body to produce too much cortisol. In some cases, children are born with a form of adrenal hyperplasia that leads to Cushing syndrome. Another cause of the syndrome is the production of the pituitary hormone ACTH by tumors situated elsewhere in the body; about half of these are lung tumors, and they are found mostly in men. This typically causes symptoms such as muscle and bone weakness; a very round face; obesity; increased thirst and urination; fatty hump between the shoulders; and high blood pressure.

  • Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia - Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is a genetic disorder of adrenal gland deficiency.  In this disorder, the body doesn’t make enough of the hormone cortisol. The bodies of people with congenital adrenal hyperplasia may also have other hormone imbalances, such as not making enough aldosterone, but making too much androgen. Symptoms and effects of this adrenal gland deficiency run from mild to serious; common symptoms include: early signs of puberty; excess facial hair; dehydration; low blood sugar levels; and constant breakouts or acne.

  • Pituitary Tumors - The pituitary gland is located in the brain and helps to regulate the activity of most other glands in the body, including the adrenal glands. In rare cases, benign (non-cancerous) tumors may grow on the pituitary gland, which may restrict the hormones it releases. Effects may include extreme exhaustion, bouts of fatigue, difficulty sleeping, and a craving for very salty or very sweet foods.

  • In some cases, tumors on the pituitary can lead to Cushing disease.  In other cases, the tumors reduce the adrenal gland’s release of hormones needed for the “fight or flight” response to stress.
  • Addison’s Disease – Fatigue and skin darkening are both symptoms of Addison’s disease, which occurs when the adrenal glands fail to make enough hydrocortisone and aldosterone. Skin getting dark is more prominently seen on areas exposed to the sun and on pressure points such as elbows and knuckles. Other symptoms include weakness, lethargy, low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sometimes severe weight loss. This disease is usually caused by an autoimmune disorder as a result of the immune system attacking the adrenal gland. It progresses slowly, and acute episodes called Addisonian crises are brought about by injury, infection, a tumor or other stresses.

  • Some other adrenal gland disorders include Adrenal Virilism, Adrenal Gland Cancer and Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a rare genetic disorder characterized by symptoms that include progressive adrenal gland dysfunction and a loss of myelin – the fatty substance that insulates and surrounds the nerve cells in the brain.

Triggers

Some adrenal gland disorders are genetic, while others are triggered by emotional stressors or physical conditions. Common causes of adrenal gland disorders include chronic infections because of a poor immune system; severe inflammation in the body; an unhealthy diet; side effects of certain medications; excess physical activity; and certain diseases. Symptoms may be aggravated from any and all of these triggers at different times of the day, depending on the affected person's health condition.

Herbal & homeopathic remedies for for adrenal gland disorders, Cushing's Syndrome, Addison's disease, adrenal fatigue, adrenal virilism, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia

Adrenal gland disorders can be life threatening conditions and treatment is aimed at restoring the adrenal glands health so they are producing normal levels of corticosteroid hormones. Treatment usually depends on the specific disorder or the specific cause of the disorder.

Using a combination of treatment options such as conventional medicine, complementary therapy and natural remedies can also be effective in treating an adrenal gland health disorder.

The treatment for adrenal gland disorders depends on the specific disorder or the specific cause of the disorder.  For example:

  • The treatment for Cushing’s syndrome depends on the cause. If the excess cortisol is caused by medication, your health care provider can change dosages or try a different medication to correct the problem.  If the Cushing’s syndrome is caused by the body making too much cortisol, treatments may include oral medication, surgery, radiation, or a combination of these treatments.

  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia can’t be cured, but it can be treated and controlled.  People with congenital adrenal hyperplasia can take medication to help replace the hormones their bodies are not making.  Some people with congenital adrenal hyperplasia only need these medications when they are sick, but others may need to take them every day.

Conventional Medicine

Depending on the cause, medication may need to be taken for the rest of the patient’s life and in certain circumstances surgery may be required.

  • Depending on the patient’s condition, corticosteroids such as prednisone may be taken orally or intravenously

  • Fludrocortisone may also be administered to restore the body’s level of sodium and potassium

  • Surgery

  • Radiation therapy

  • Microsurgery

If you have a tumor, get rid of it

Doctors can successfully treat most pituitary tumors with microsurgery, radiation therapy, surgery, drugs, or a combination of these treatments. Surgery is currently the treatment of choice for tumors that grow rapidly, especially if they threaten or affect vision.  The treatment plan for other pituitary tumors differs according to the type and size of the tumor.

Natural Approach
Holistic and natural remedies can be highly effective when used in combination with other treatments. These remedies manage to address the symptoms of the adrenal gland health disorder as well as the individual’s overall health and wellbeing.

Herbal and homeopathic remedies are gentle, yet effective without the harmful side effects of conventional medicine. A combination of herbs such as Borago officinalis (Borage), Eleutherococcus senticosis (Siberian Ginseng) and Astragalus membranaceous (Huang Qi)  can be used to support the functioning of the adrenal glands and help to assist the body to fight the stress of modern day living.

Consult a homeopath or naturopath for a remedy specific to your needs.

dietary habits helpful in for adrenal gland disorders, Cushing's Syndrome, Addison's disease, adrenal fatigue, adrenal virilism, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia

You have the power to lessen the burden on your adrenals — and your whole body. It doesn’t take much. The small choices you make in regards to your nutrition and eating patterns will make a difference.

Try & follow the below guidelines to support your adrenals.

Meal Times

When you eat can drastically affect adrenal output. You should eat three meals a day and have snacks between meals. Basically, never allow yourself to get too hungry as low blood sugar by itself puts stress on your body and can tax your adrenals. A snack before bedtime will ensure that you sleep throughout the night.

Combinations

Eating in a combination is the best for adrenal fatigue. Mix fat, protein and carbohydrates for each meal in order to maintain energy throughout the day. Eating meals and snacks that are made of fresh whole foods, preferably organic or locally grown, without colors, dyes, chemicals, preservatives or added hormones are best to strive for. Including some protein in all your meals and snacks (especially in the morning) will have a stabilizing effect on your blood sugar, which in turn can help you overcome caffeine and sugar cravings.

Salt

Salt in moderation tends to benefit most people with adrenal fatigue. You may actually become tired by not having enough salt in your system, so be sure to use salts with valuable nutrients, like sea salt or Celtic salt. Craving for salt in people with adrenal fatigue is complicated to explain, but in a nutshell, it’s a result of low aldosterone. Aldosterone, a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex, is part of the complex mechanism that regulates blood pressure in the body. Levels of aldosterone go up and down in much the same diurnal pattern as cortisol does, and likewise go up as a normal response to stressful situations.

Protein

Proteins from meat, such as fowl, fish, eggs and dairy improve adrenal fatigue incredibly. Be sure to avoid processed proteins, such as meat mixtures or processed cheese. Eating raw or lightly cooked proteins will help your body process the food and will positively affect the adrenal energy components.

Go Green

Colorful, organic vegetables provide natural nutrients and vitamins that contribute to a well-balanced diet. Lightly boil or grill peppers, eggplant, tomatoes and broccoli to maintain high vitamin content.

Fruits

Because fruits contain fructose and potassium, you need to use caution when deciding which fruits to eat. Papayas, mangos, plums, pears, kiwis, apples and cherries are excellent for an adrenal fatigue diet. Avoid bananas, raisins, dates, figs, oranges and grapefruit for their high carbohydrate and potassium content. Especially try to eliminate from breakfast when blood sugars tend to be their lowest

Sugar and Flour

Avoid products made with sugar and flour - bread, pies, cookies, soft drinks, white bread or donuts. These products are the most craved food for people with adrenal fatigue syndrome, but these ingredients raise blood sugar levels and often result in more cravings and hypoglycemic symptoms. These foods allow a great surge of energy, but generally the surge is followed by an even greater dip in energy, causing you to feel worse.

Hydrogenated Oils

Margarine, vegetable shortening and oils, like commercial peanut butters, disrupt metabolism of normal fatty acids. Avoid these ingredients as much as possible, as they use up the enzymes that help process good oils and fats.

More Food to Avoid

Do not consume deep-fried foods, fast food or junk food, as these commercially made food products are processed and do not contain healthy proteins, nutrients or vitamins.

Beverages

Drink water, green tea, barley tea, vegetable juices or goat's milk to flush your system and aid in digestion. Avoid caffeine, such as coffee or black tea, alcohol and chocolate. Caffeine can pick you up in the short term, but it can also over-stimulate the adrenals, which only compounds fatigue as it wears off. And if drinking a cup of coffee is a relaxing part of your routine and you don’t want to give it up, drink it in the morning with something nutritious to eat, and add cream to dull the negative effects of caffeine.
