General description and overview on Aging skin, age spots, wrinkles, bags under the eyes

As a person ages all the elements of the skin begin to change, the surface dries and there is less tone and elasticity. This transformation is unavoidable but the speed at which it takes place varies from person to person depending on genetic make-up and lifestyle factors such as smoking and over-exposure to the sun.

The first visible signs of aging usually appear on the face as wrinkles and shadows under the eyes. There may also be swelling and reddening of the upper eyelids.

Age spots, or liver spots (although no connection with liver), are flat areas of brown pigment that often occur on the backs of the hands and on the face. They are actually, simple areas of excess pigment, which result from years of exposure to sunlight. Because it takes decades to see the results of sun damage, many people don’t notice the marks until later in life, but people who have had significant sun exposure can develop them in their twenties & thirties.

Causes of Aging skin, age spots, wrinkles, bags under the eyes

Skin aging is a normal part of the general aging process. It can be accelerated by dehydration caused by exposure to the sun or wind, by a lack of the vitamins A and D, and by excessive alcohol consumption and smoking.

Wrinkles

Wrinkles are due to the loss of elasticity in the skin that occurs with age. Premature wrinkling can be caused by overexposure to the ultraviolet rays in sunlight which damages the connective fibers in the skin. These rays also promote the generation in the body of rogue oxygen molecules called free radicals, which wreck havoc on cell membranes.

The first lines to appear are usually ‘crow’s feet’, more generously termed ‘laughter lines’, which occur at the corners of the eyes as a result of repeatedly contracting the eye muscles. Frown lines may occur between the eyebrows and furrows may crease the forehead.

Actually, after the age of 30 or so, some of the connective tissue in your skin starts to break down, oil production slows down and wrinkles develop. Those are facts of life, but wrinkles are also caused by factors that you can control like smoking and excessive exposure to skin.

Smoking is a major culprit; it slows down circulation, so your skin doesn’t get as much oxygen.

Causes and herbal supllements & remedies for Aging skin, age spots, wrinkles, bags under the eyes. Do not wipe the eye vigorously – stretching the skin can contribute to the formation of new wrinkles (remember the skin loses its ability to ‘snap’ back into shape as we age)!

Bags under the eyes

Bags under the eyes are due to a congestion of the area beneath the lower eyelid, when there are localized problems with the circulation of lymph. They often appear in cases of acute or long-term insomnia. Stress, headaches and fatigue can accentuate the problem.

Age spots

Despite their name, these flat or rounded brown spots that can appear on the face or backs of the hands are not caused by age. We all have Melanin in our skin - the dark pigment that gives our skin its normal color. When we tan extra melanin is produced to protect the deeper layers of our skin. Unfortunately when we age extra melanin becomes "clumped" or is produced in higher concentrations than normal, leading to the creation of age spots.

They are simply due to decades of exposure to sun rays. Some drugs can also make you more vulnerable to sun damage and related age spots. These include diuretics, tetracycline, and drugs for diabetes and high blood pressure.

Oxidative stress

Although we may not realize it, on a cellular level, oxidization occurs and ultimately leads to aging. Most scientists will agree that free radicals often injure cells and lead to aging. Many scientific reports suggest that these skin changes (particularly the brown age spots) are nothing but remains of the degeneration started by the oxidative stress.

Both smoking and excessive drinking deplete the body’s stores of vital nutrients as well as stimulating the production of these harmful free radicals.

The unstable atoms or molecules known as free radicals are produced by the body as a consequence of its normal metabolism, and as part of its natural defense against disease. Sometimes, however, the body over-reacts, increasing its free radical production and releasing more of the unstable atoms or molecules than it needs. Factors other than smoking and drinking that can spark their overproduction include smog, overexposure to ultraviolet light, illness and even intense exercise.

Causes & homeopathic medicines & remedies for Aging skin, age spots, wrinkles, bags under the eyes. Oxidative stress is the underlying cause of almost all of the chronic degenerative diseases including aging related skin issues.

Free radicals contain at least one unpaired electron (or negative charge), making them highly reactive. As soon as they are produced, they search for other molecules with a positive charge with which they can react – this reaction is called oxidation. Free radicals can oxidize – and so damage – DNA and cell membranes, opening the way for cancers and diseases to develop.

The body has defense mechanisms against free radicals – ANTIOXIDANT enzymes and nutrients in the blood serve to ‘mop up’ free radicals and render them harmless. Protective nutrients include iron, zinc, copper, manganese and selenium (which help to make up protective antioxidant enzymes) as well as vitamins A, C and E. Beta Carotene & some bioflavonoids also provide protection against oxidation.

Whichever part of the body receives the most free radical damage is the first to wear out and potentially develop degenerative disease. If it is your eyes, you could develop macular degeneration or cataracts. If it is your blood vessels, you could have a heart attack or a stroke. If it is your joint space, you could develop arthritis. If it is your brain, you could develop Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease.

Herbal and homeopathic remedies for controlling Aging skin, age spots, wrinkles, bags under the eyes

Deep wrinkles in the forehead, fine lines around the eyes and lines around the mouth, changes in the pigment of the skin, broken capillaries and spider veins are all a result of extrinsic aging and can be avoided to a certain effect. The best way to deal with wrinkles, age spots is to prevent or postpone them for as long as possible.

Although wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process, there are various treatment options to reduce the appearance of skin wrinkles. Several anti-wrinkle creams and lotions containing alpha-hydroxy acids are available over-the-counter to smooth lines or wrinkles and increase the volume of tissue cells – these creams are not a miracle cure and cannot remove wrinkles!

Chemical peels and laser resurfacing are techniques used to remove dead cells from the surface layer of the skin thereby stimulating the regenerative process. Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections may also help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles temporarily. More recently, people are choosing plastic surgery to eliminate wrinkles.

The truth is that while creams may help to moisturize the skin, there is no conventional way to get rid of wrinkles. Furthermore, many creams are too rich and may further irritate the skin, or cause the skin to over compensate and disrupt the delicate balance of natural skin oils.

As facial wrinkles in particular seem to reveal the years, in recent times, drastic measures have been introduced to stop, reduce, or get rid of the tell tale signs of aging on the face. The facelift is a cosmetic surgery treatment for wrinkles, pouches, bags, and sagging skin. This is not a long tern answer – as the signs of age will eventually return and another facelift will be needed! Furthermore, these procedures are invasive and cause trauma to the facial tissues.

Herbal & homeopathic supplements & medicines for Aging skin, age spots, wrinkles, bags under the eyes. Botox injections have become popular to reduce the appearance of wrinkles – however, this is one of the most deadly biochemicals known! This substance partially paralyzes facial muscles and is not a procedure that should be undertaken without thorough research regarding the potential risks!

Natural Alternatives

Natural products such as herbal and homeopathic remedies can help keep skin supple and moisturized in a gentle manner, without disrupting the harmony of the skin. Herbal and homeopathic remedies present a gentle option – without the harsh side effects of chemicals and synthetics.

Spirulina can help to promote skin metabolism and lessen scarring and fine lines while the herb Dandelion can be used to naturally detox the skin and purify the blood and lymphatic system, thus promoting an inner glow that helps create translucent skin and discourage dry facial skin.

Other herbs such as Horsetail and Rosemary can also be beneficial – helping to smooth texture, strengthen and tone the skin while Kali sulph and Silicea nourish skin cells from the inside on a cellular level.

As far as taking care of the oxidation taking place in your body, some herbs have been found to be extremely effective in fighting it out. One such ingredient is Aspalathus linearis (Rooibos) – an all round supportive tonic, and has powerful anti-oxidant properties, fighting free radicals due to its superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetic properties.

Grapeseed extract is a potent source of proanthocyanidins, or pycnogenols containing naturally occurring proanthocyanidins – a natural and powerful Antioxidant. Proanthocyanidins also have an affinity for cell membranes, providing support to reduce capillary permeability and fragility.

Diet recommended for overcoming Aging skin, age spots, wrinkles, bags under the eyes

  • Eat fish such as salmon, sardines, fresh tuna and trout several times a week. These are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are very nourishing to your skin.
  • Another excellent way to get your omega-3s is to eat a teaspoon of flaxseed oil every day. Mix it with juice or pour it over a salad.
  • Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. These provide vitamins A, C and E – anti-oxidants that block harmful free radicals before they can cause skin damage.
  • B-complex vitamins are also important for your overall health and healthy skin. They are easily found in beef, chicken, eggs, whole meat and enriched flour, and milk.
  • Avoid dehydration – Drink at least 2 liters of water daily.

Dos and don'ts and general precautions in Aging skin, age spots, wrinkles, bags under the eyes

Sunrays

The first line of wrinkle defense is staying out of the sun. Too much sun eventually does the same thing to your skin that it does to dried fruit: It shrivels up. This is especially true today, as depletion of the earth’s ozone layer allows more of he sun’s harmful rays to reach your vulnerable skin.

Some precautions to take with respect to exposure to sunlight are:

  • Avoid mid-day sunlight – About 95% of the sun’s wrinkling rays hit the earth between the hours of 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
  • Always use a high SPF (sun protection factor) sunscreen while venturing out in the sun. apply it liberally over your face, neck and other areas of exposed skin.
  • Just for your information that the sun’s skin-shriveling rays are strongest at high altitudes (where the air is thinner) and southern latitudes (closer to the equator), and that sun rays reflected from light colored surfaces like sand, snow and concrete also have the same shriveling effect on your skin.
  • Wear sunglasses to avoid crow’s feet – wrinkles that come from screwing up your eyes. Even existing crow’s feet can fade after several months of consistently wearing sunglasses.
  • People with age spots should wear a sunhat with a wide brim of at least 10 cm. this will keep the sun off your face and neck and help to stop age spots from developing in those areas. Choose a hat with a cotton lining – woven straw hats don’t provide much protection.

Lotions, Creams & Poultices

For Wrinkles

Use a lotion or cream containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), which come from milk, fruit and sugar cane, and act by clearing away dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. These products encourage collagen growth, which fills in wrinkles. They also counteract free radicals

Apply fresh Aloe vera gel, which contains malic acid. Cut off a leaf at the base and slit it open. Scrape out the gel with a spoon, taking care not to rupture the green rind, and apply.

Pawpaws are full of enzymes that can etch away the top layer of your skin, lessening the appearance of wrinkles. Thoroughly mix 2 tablespoons of pawpaw pulp with 1 tablespoon dry oats to help exfoliate your skin. Apply the mixture and leave it on for 10 minutes, then scrub it off with a face washer.

For Age Spots

Apply Aloe vera gel as described above. The plant contains chemicals that slough away dead cells and encourage the growth of new, healthy ones. Apply the gel once or twice a day.

Wipe them with buttermilk as they contain lactic acid, which gently exfoliates sun-damaged skin and pigmented areas. Alternatively, you may apply lemon juice to the spots at least twice a day. Its acidic nature removes the outer layer of the skin gently and lightens the spots.

Strawberries make a gentle, effective treatment mask for fading age spots and lightening freckles. Mash 1-2 fresh strawberries and mix with 2 teaspoons of cream to make a sloppy paste. Apply mixture to clean skin, leave for 15 minutes, then remove with a warm, damp face washer and pat dry.

Precautions & dos & don'ts for for Aging skin, age spots, wrinkles, bags under the eyes. Tanning saloon - Half an hour on a sunbed does more harm than lying on the beach all day without sunscreen.

Some facial exercises

Pronouncing ‘E-O’ loudly is helpful in making the cheeks strong. First of all, wide open your mouth, pronounce E and stretch your lips as good as possible, thereafter pronouncing O let the cheeks squeeze inwards. Repeat this process many times.

Spread small bits of shredded paper on the table, and try to blow up these bits as far as possible. Blowing will bring tension to your cheeks, which is helpful to cure wrinkles.

Fill your mouth with water, do not drink it, retain in the mouth, and try swelling your cheeks one by one. Repeat this process every morning while cleaning your mouth and face.

Do not gain & lose weight alternatively

Gaining a lot of weight can stretch your skin. Then losing weight (especially if you are older and your skin is less elastic) can result in wrinkles because the skin will not completely retract to its original size. Similarly, binge drinkers face this problem as their face puffs up in the morning and retracts back after some time.

Don’t smoke

Smoking can result in premature wrinkling around your mouth due to all those years of constant puckering lips around cigarettes. Smoking also tends to decrease blood supply to the blood vessels under your skin, which could exacerbate wrinkling. Off course, we all know that smoking is a big culprit when you discuss about oxidative stress.

Keep pillows away from your face

Watch out for your sleep wrinkles. These are wrinkles that are caused by pressing your face down into your pillow. If you are guilty of this habit, learn to sleep on your back instead.
