Conjunctivitis is basically an inflammation of the conjunctiva; the delicate, thin, clear mucus membranes covering the front of the eye. These membranes stretch from the inside of your eyelids to the outer part of your eye.
There are several forms of conjunctivitis, the most common of them being infective conjunctivitis. It is known as ‘pink eye’ as it turns the white of your eye into pink. It spreads from person to person through direct contact (hand-to-eye) and is highly contagious because of which, overcrowding and filthy, unhealthy living conditions can even take this infection to epidemic proportions. |

Conjunctivitis is, as such, not a serious problem by itself and shall go away by itself in a few days time. You should however consult your ophthalmologist who would prescribe proper medications according to the symptoms and condition of your eyes. Moreover, chronic conjunctivitis, if left untreated, is a potential permanent eye damager.
So, meet your doctor if your infection is getting worse after 5 days instead of clearing of and if your conjunctivitis is accompanied by pain, vision alteration and too much pus discharge. |

Conjunctivitis
caused by viral and bacterial infections is usually treated with
topical antibiotic ointments or sodium containing eye drops to
prevent secondary bacterial infections.
In the case of allergic conjunctivitis, your doctor may
prescribe oral anti-histamines - however, these may dry the eyes
causing further complications. It is important to investigate
all possible side effects of any medication your doctor may
recommend and make an informed decision on what treatment will
best suit you!
Conjunctivitis, like many eye ailments, is frustrating and bothersome as your eye probably feels twice as large as it actually is and it may feel like your eyelids have turned to sandpaper. Luckily, nature has a few effective herbal and homeopathic remedies that help with overall eye health and swift recovery!
Herbal ingredients such as Aspalathus linearis (Rooibos) and Sutherlandia frutescens are powerful anti-oxidants and help to maintain a healthy supply of blood, oxygen and essential nutrients to the eye – all of which are essential to the rapid recovery from any eye condition.
Another essential herb commonly used for eye health is Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry) which is used to strengthen eye capillaries, prevent eye-related disease and infection, and restore the eyes to their healthy, bright and problem-free state.
-
Euphrasia (6C) is used to keep eyes healthy and bright. It is very beneficial taken internally. Other benefits include the maintenance of good vision and eye health. (Stoss M, Michels C, Peter E, Beutke R, Gorter RW. "Prospective cohort trial of Euphrasia single-dose eye drops in conjunctivitis." Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg, South Africa. J Altern Complement Med. 2000 Dec;6(6):499-508.)
-
Pulsatilla (12C) is a naturally gentle and soothing tonic to support eye health.
-
Psorinum (12C) is a homeopathic ingredient used to address symptoms often aggravated by heat.
-
Merc sol (6C) is good for eye complaints where the eyelids are red, swollen, and stuck together, or stinging, watery, aching eyes.
-
Graphites (6C) is a great homeopathic remedy to address excess production of gummy secretions.
-
Calendula (3X) is one of the most well-known homeopathic ingredients to soothe. Calendula helps to support healthy tissues, and also acts as an excellent general tonic for the eye.
-
Agrimony (3X) is a well-known astringent well known for its supportive capacity.

Deficiency of riboflavin results in red colored ring formation in front of the eye during conjunctivitis. Its deficiency may also result in soreness and reddening or cracking at the outer corners of the eye. Rich sources of Riboflavin (vitamin B2) are eggs, poultry, meat, fish, dairy products, fortified breakfast cereals, leafy greens
-
Vitamin A deficiency is linked with chronic conjunctivitis hence people prone to this disease should take ample of this vitamin found easily in the form of beta carotene in whole milk, curds, egg yolk, pumpkin, carrots, leafy vegetables, tomatoes, mangoes, and papaya.
-
Also, eat food rich in vitamin C and zinc as both of them improve your immunity level immensely. Diet containing fresh fruits and vegetables should provide you with enough vitamin C in a day although emphasis must be given on citrus fruits (fresh fruits in totality and not their juice only) like grapes and blackberries, as they also contain bioflavonoids. Some important fruits and vegetables are blackcurrant, vegetables (broccoli, potatoes), red capsicums and chillies, strawberry, kiwifruit and rockmelon. Seafood (particularly shellfish and oysters), wheat germ, dairy products, chicken, beef, eggs and nuts are rich sources of zinc.
-
Mixed raw vegetable juices like that containing equal parts of spinach and carrot are good sources of all that is required to provide you with relief and important nutrients during this misery of yours.
-
Avoid refined foods and foods containing trans-fatty acids such as white breads, pastas, cookies, sugar, cream, crackers, cakes, rice, boiled potatoes, puddings and pies, condiments, pickles, sauces, French fries, onion rings, donuts, and margarine.
-
Instead of red meats, go for more lean meats, cold-water fish, tofu (soy, if no allergy) or, still better, beans for protein.
-
Avoid excessive consumption of stimulants like tea, coffee, alcohol, and tobacco.
-
Go heavy on fluids - Drink at least 7 - 8 glasses of water daily

Some most effective home made remedies for conjunctivitis
-
Make black coffee without sugar and soak a cotton ball in it. Clean the area over the eyes and then put 2 drops of the coffee in the affected eye. Repeat 2 to 3 times a day and see the result for yourself.
-
Boil a teaspoon of boric acid in a cup of water, cool, and apply with a sterile eyecup or washcloth. For added effect, pour 10 drops of goldenseal herb tincture in the solution.
-
If you breast feed your baby and s/he happens to have conjunctivitis, squirt some of the milk into both eyes. Let the baby rest in your arms for a few minutes with a little pool of breast milk in the eyes. In all probability, the infection will go away in a day or two.

-
When the conjunctivitis ‘season’ is on, never share face cloths and towels with anybody. Ditto with cosmetics. Increase your immunity levels to avoid contracting conjunctivitis from others (Go for our
ImmunityPlus).
-
In case of possible conjunctivitis due to chemical irritants, the best way out is to protect the eyes by wearing goggles or to flush the irritants out of the eyes immediately after being exposed to them.
-
Wear dark glasses to protect your eyes from direct sunlight.
-
Get your nose, ear and throat problems treated as fast as possible as they may lead you to conjunctivitis.
-
In case of conjunctivitis due to viral or bacterial infection, warm compresses over the eyes definitely provide you with some relief.
-
If the conjunctivitis is allergic, use cold compresses instead as this will relieve the itch characteristic of allergic conjunctivitis. This cold fomentation will also help the tissues get back to their normal state.
-
Clear your eyes continuously of any crusts or water/mucus as this will aid in faster healing.
-
Wear tight fitting goggles while going to swimming if you have a problem with the chlorinated water in there.
-
Interrupt your work by taking a break every 2-3 hours, more so, if your job demands sitting in front of the computer.
