General description & overview of Hair Loss (Baldness / Alopecia / Broken hair), alopecia areata, Male pattern baldness, Female diffuse baldness, Telogen hair effluvium (hair shedding)

Although, not of any particular significance vis-à-vis our general well being, our hair get much more importance from us than any other organ, including our face. Therefore, there is little surprise that you only fall short of a heart attack when you first see your receding hairline.

To understand why this suffering exists in majority of the people, you need to understand a few basics. There are more than a hundred thousand hair on your scalp which generally grow up to 12cms in length every year. Your hair is buried about 1/4th of a centimeter down in the corium, the layer of skin beneath the epidermis that contains the blood and nerves. The base point is the follicle which, through an amazing and complex affair, operates 24 hours a day for up to seven years and then shuts down for rest and repairs (usually this period lasts 3 months). After taking this well deserved break, the follicle starts producing hair once again. You loose around 75-100 hair a day, which get replaced by the new ones. At any point of time, about 90% of the hair on your head are in the growth phase and about 10% in the resting phase before falling out.

The essential production of hair follicles is protein. In effect, the hair is made up almost entirely of protein, particularly a fibrous protein called keratin, which is also found in fingernails and toenails. As a child, follicles produce soft “vellus” hair which after puberty changes to the coarser “terminal” hair that every adult has, although eventually, many scalp follicles may degenerate and start producing vellus hair again instead of terminal hair or they may shut down completely. This is what is known as ordinary baldness or as the sufferers are generally men – male pattern baldness. Usually, with age, these hair become smaller in diameter and the quality too gets poorer. Women are relatively less prone to baldness, though their hair also suffer from quality degradation with time.

Another strange ailment is alopecia areata - patchy baldness. In this condition, hair loss occurs in patches, producing a completely bald area surrounded by normal hair growth. This kind of baldness is mostly genetic in nature.

Natural remedies like herbal & homeopathic ones have been found to be extremely beneficial in stubborn hair loss cases where even the strongest of prescription medicines failed. Read more to know more..

Causes of Hair Loss (Baldness / Alopecia / Broken hair), alopecia areata, Male pattern baldness, Female diffuse baldness, Telogen hair effluvium (hair shedding)

·

Aging (e.g. male pattern baldness) - In androgenetic alopecia, some hair follicles genetically produce a substance that reacts with male hormones. Hormones play the dominant role when talking about androgenetic alopecia. Simply put, both men and women produce testosterone which can be converted to dihydrotestosterone ( DHT) with the aid of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. DHT shrinks hair follicles causing the membranes in the scalp to thicken, become inelastic and restrict blood flow. This causes the hair follicles to atrophy. As you get older, this reaction eventually causes the follicle to shut down and as a result the falling hair is not replaced.

·

Aging (Female diffuse baldness) - This happens more slowly than male pattern baldness because women have a small amount of male hormones in their bodies. A hormone imbalance may make the problem worse as when a woman strikes menopause, though other common reasons include incorrect brushing and tight hair bands or rollers (traction alopecia). Traction alopecia is temporary and hair grow back with a looser hair style and gentler setting method.

·

Hormonal changes (imbalances) – like in poly cystic ovarian disease (PCOS)

·

Thyroid problems

·

Harsh chemicals (e.g. hair coloring, perms)

·

Scarring from burns

·

X-ray therapy

·

Telogen hair effluvium (shedding) - This is basically due to some temporary physiological upset like:

After pregnancy

Side Effects of medication (e.g. anticoagulants, gout medication, antidepressives, contraceptives and excess
   Vitamin A)

Rapid weight loss

Reaction to illness or major surgery (e.g. sustained high fever, hair may fall out up to three months afterwards)

Reaction to chemotherapy

Emotional upsets

·

Dietary deficiencies (e.g. iron deficiency)

·

Fungal infections of the scalp (e.g. ringworm ‘tinea capitis’)

·

Smoking

·

Stress

·

Rarely, hair loss may be an early symptom of disease like diabetes or lupus.

·

Cause of alopecia areata is believed to be immunological and genetic, but emotional stress and some infections are also attributed with this problem.

·

Trichotillomania – This psychological disorder makes the person suffer hair loss due to habitual pulling out of hair.

If the cause of your hair loss is not known to you or is unclear, your doctor should first of all suggest thyroid function tests or a blood test to rule out immune system problems. Afterwards, if need arises, s/he will conduct biopsy of a small sample of your scalp tissue for further examination. Your doctor will also ask you a series of questions and once the cause has been found, this will determine treatment. By far the majority of cases of hair loss (with the exception of male pattern baldness) are only temporary and will respond well to treatment. Treatment will usually involve management of the underlying causes by using different ways for treating it, ranging from a change in medication, treating an underlying medical condition and using products to promote hair growth.

Herbal & homeopathic remedies useful in Hair Loss (Baldness / Alopecia / Broken hair), alopecia areata, Male pattern baldness, Female diffuse baldness, Telogen hair effluvium (hair shedding)

There are several treatment options that may help to stimulate and encourage hair growth. If hair loss occurs as a result of an underlying condition or disease, then the condition needs to be treated first. The various types of hair loss are treated with specific medication which includes antibiotics, corticosteroids, or steroid injections. For more serious episodes of hair loss, surgical procedures such as hair transplants, scalp reduction or skin grafts may be performed to replace hair loss.

Natural and holistic therapy offers a gentler alternative for people experiencing hair loss than the harsh effects of conventional medication. Treatments such as herbal and homeopathic remedies stimulate and encourage hair growth as well as support blood circulation, hormonal balance and thyroid functioning.

Herbal remedies along with good nutritional diet (supplements in case of severe deficiency or if directed by your doctor) help hair grow stronger and more plentifully by nourishing it at the roots. They achieve this by stimulating blood flow and supplying nutrients to the hair follicles and hence promoting healthy hair growth and slowing down excessive hair loss. Although the process begins within a few days, as the hair grow slowly, the results are visible only after a few months.

Herbs commonly used include Ginkgo biloba, Rosmarinus officinale and Xanthoxylum clavaherculis help to promote strong, abundant hair. Other powerful herbs such as Equisetum arvense, Avena sativa and Echinacea are effective combating hair loss and nourishing hair follicles.

Together, these herbs are highly capable of:

- Promoting healthy hair growth
- Encouraging healthy blood supply and circulation to the hair follicle and scalp
- Discouraging common age-related hair loss and hair thinning
- Supporting the thyroid and all mechanisms involved in hormonal balance in the body
- Supporting the body’s ability to obtain nutrients from food, thus promoting healthy, strong hair

Essential Oils of Chamomile, Rosemary and Sage on the other hand can in conjunction with these remedies:

- Support healthy hair growth
- Slow down age-related hair loss
- Nourish the scalp and hair follicles
- Support healthy blood flow to the scalp

Helpful dietary habist in Hair Loss (Baldness / Alopecia / Broken hair), alopecia areata, Male pattern baldness, Female diffuse baldness, Telogen hair effluvium (hair shedding)

The condition of your hair and scalp is considered as a clear pointer to your general well being. Most of the illnesses or emotional stress can be associated with dull, lifeless hair and hair fall. The reason, most of the times, is lack of certain vitamins and minerals in your diet.

In particular, people suffering from stress are often found with B vitamins deficiency, especially vitamin B6 and folic acid. B vitamins are considered essential for healthy hair. Same is the case with vitamin A, deficiency of which makes your hair weak and dull. Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a great stimulant of hair growth, is an essential fatty acid (EFA) in the omega-6 family that is found basically in plant-based oils. EFAs are essential to human health but cannot be made in the body and are obtained from food. The above along with vitamin D and zinc are considered extremely helpful in inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. This in turn makes the hair follicles healthier and less prone to losing their virility. Therefore food rich in the above trace minerals and vitamins (and their supplements if the deficiency is severe or if your doctor persists) is necessary for keeping your hair from falling, particularly in androgenetic alopecia.

You should therefore incorporate these dietary changes along with the use of herbal remedies discussed above for maximum benefits.

Some useful food sources of the above vitamins and minerals are

·

Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) - It is found in the plant seed oils of evening primrose, black currant, borage, fungal oils and spirulina (usually called blue-green algae).

·

Vitamin A – Usual sources of vitamin A (in the form of beta carotene) are whole milk, curds, egg yolk, pumpkin, carrots, leafy vegetables, tomatoes, mangoes, and papaya.

·

B6 vitamin – B6 vitamin is easily found in chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon, shrimp, beef liver, lentils, soybeans, nuts, avocados, bananas, carrots, brown rice, bran, pulses, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, and whole-grain flour.

·

Folic acid – green leafy vegetables including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, leeks, silverbeet, spinach, asparagus, turnip, beet and mustard greens, lima beans, soybeans liver, pulses, cooked asparagus, breakfast cereal, orange juice, brewer's yeast, root vegetables, whole grains, wheat germ, bulgur wheat, kidney beans, white beans, mung beans oysters, salmon, avocado, and milk.

·

Vitamin D – It also helps in giving a tremendous fillip to your body’s defense system. The sources include dairy products, fish such as salmon, sardines, herring

·

Zinc - Shellfish (especially oysters) and nuts are rich sources of zinc. Other sources include red meats, poultry, cheese (ricotta, Swiss, gouda), shrimp, crab, legumes (especially lima beans, black-eyed peas, soybeans), whole grains, tofu, brewer's yeast, cooked greens, mushrooms, green beans, tahini, and pumpkin and sunflower seeds.

If the reason behind your growing baldness is other than androgenetic, it is always advisable to wait till the treatment for the underlying cause is being meted out to you. Hopefully, your hair will start growing once the underlying disease is cured, as in case of chemotherapy. If afterwards, the hair stop falling but the bald patches or the quantum of hair remains the same, then the above foods or supplements can be taken along with the herbal remedies recommended. This then will definitely improve the density of your hair.

You should reduce the intake of pro-inflammatory foods like saturated fats, dairy products, and other animal products and instead go for fresh vegetables, whole grains, essential fatty acids (particularly GLA) and non-animal protein containing foods like nuts, legumes, and soy.

Some most effective home made remedies for Hair Loss are:

·

Mix 4 tablespoon of henna leaves in a cup of mustard oil and boil. Filter the resulting mixture in a bottle and massage regularly with this oil at your bald patches.

·

Take a tablespoon of grounded liquorice root and mix in a cup of milk. Also add ¼ th spoonful of saffron. Apply the resulting paste on the patches at bedtime.

·

In the morning, you may apply a mixture of fenugreek seeds (grounded) with water on your head. For best results, put the mixture as such throughout the night and also wrap your head with a cloth after applying. Leave this for an hour before washing your hair.

·

Instead of using a soap or shampoo, try this. Mix equal quantities of lime peel, fenugreek seeds, dried curry leaves, green gram and shikakai and grind the mixture into fine powder. Use this in place of your normal shampoo.

Dos and don'ts & precautionary measures in Hair Loss (Baldness / Alopecia / Broken hair), alopecia areata, Male pattern baldness, Female diffuse baldness, Telogen hair effluvium (hair shedding)

·

First things first, if you are taking prescription medications, talk to your doctor and find out if your medication is contributing to your hair loss.

·

To reduce your anxiety and stress levels, you should do some mild exercises, especially yoga, which is a time tested stress buster, and off course it help tremendously in keeping you healthy. Remember, stress reduction techniques can increase blood flow to the scalp.

·

If you are a women, have your female hormones tested. If they are imbalanced, talk to your health care provider about bio-identical hormone replacements.

·

The reason behind you losing your hair may be your pigtails, cornrows, use of curling iron, hair dryer or hot rollers. Try and change your hair style to one that puts less pressure and stress on your hair and scalp.

·

If hot oil treatments or chemicals such as those used in permanents are causing inflammation to the scalp, discontinue their use, or reduce the number of times you are using them.

·

Use gentle shampoos and conditioners to avoid any unnecessary damage to your hair. A lot of safe, light herbal shampoos are available in the market today. You may, and should, use them along with the herbal remedies ReGrow Plus & ReGrow Scalp Massage Oil as discussed above.
