Natural herbal &
homeopathic help for people suffering from bad breath (halitosis)
Halitosis (Bad Breath)
HEALTH HERBS & NUTRITION
- REMEDIES - DIGESTIVE SYSTEM - HALITOSIS (BAD BREATH)

Bad breath, known medically as halitosis, is a very embarrassing
condition for any individual. Halitosis is usually a trivial
complaint, often caused by curry, garlic, alcohol or cigarettes. It
normally gets cured by sensible eating habits and proper oral
hygiene, unless off course, if its cause is an illness like gum
infection, diabetes, uremia, liver failure etc.
Most of the times, you rarely know that you have bad breath and
people close to you are mostly too polite to give you this essential
bit of information.

Unpleasant odor from the mouth – It could be somewhat similar to
acetone, ammonia, fishy or totally incomprehensible.

|
· |
Most common causes of halitosis are actually found in
the mouth itself –
a bad tooth or abscess, tartar
formation, mouth ulcers, inflamed and infected gums or
decayed food caught between the teeth. |

|
|
· |
Empty stomach, digestive disorders like infection of the
digestive tract,
constipation and infection of the
stomach are some digestion related problems that make up
the second most common list of causes of halitosis. |
|
· |
The other usual suspects are smoking and alcohol |
|
· |
Other lesser known causes of bad breath include
diabetes, uremia, liver failure, chronic chest
infections and sinusitis. |
|
· |
Garlic and curry, and other similarly spiced up foods
which basically contain onion, hot peppers and other
spices. Spices tend to stay and re-circulate through
essential oils they leave in your mouth. |
|
· |
Cheese – It gets a hold on your breath and doesn’t let
it go. Sometimes, other dairy products too are
responsible for bad breath. |
|
· |
Fish like tuna and anchovies, and spicy deli meats like
salami and pepperoni also leave their respective
peculiar smell long after you have had them. |

While
there are plenty of short-term products such as gums and
fresheners on the market, most do not last more than a couple
of hours and tend to only mask the bad breath rather than
address underlying causes.
For this reason, many people are now turning to natural herbal and
homeopathic ingredients such as Kali. Phos, Silica and Sweet Fennel
to successfully help them with halitosis. Kali. Phos is well known
for its antiseptic and cleansing properties and is effective at
addressing putrefactive conditions such as halitosis, foul smelling
flatulence and stools.
Silica works by cleansing the cells of toxins and ridding the body
of bad odors, while addressing some of the underlying causes of bad
breath such as gum disease, sinus infections and mouth abscess.
Lastly, sweet fennel has a long history of use for treating
digestion problems and is a popular aid to sweeten the breath.

Kalium phosphate (Kali. phos.) (D6) is a
biochemic tissue salt which is a constituent of all
fluids in the body. Kali. phos. is well known as a
systemic cleanser, helping to keep the entire body
smelling pleasant. It is also an excellent nerve tonic. Kali. Phos is well known
for its antiseptic and cleansing properties and is effective at
addressing putrefactive conditions such as halitosis, foul smelling
flatulence and stools. |
|
· |
Silica (D6) has a unique ability to cleanse the
cells of toxins and support breath fresh ness. Silica is
naturally occurring in the body, especially in hair,
nails, skin, nerve sheaths and all mucus membranes,
including the mouth and digestive tract. This biochemic
tissue salt is also frequently recommended to promote
gum health and to maintain natural balance of enzymes in
the mouth. Silica acts as a natural cleanser and
purifier and will also eliminate all foreign matter in
the body. For this reason Silica should not be used by
people with any type of prosthesis, breast implants,
pace makers, metal plates, pins or artificial tubes in
the body. |
|
· |
Foeniculum vulgare (Sweet Fennel) has been used
for many centuries and contains an aniseed-flavored
essential oil containing mostly anethole, as well as
fenchone - both of which are thought to account for its
remedial properties. Fennel is an excellent digestive
tonic. Fennel seeds have been long used as an aid to
sweeten the breath. |
|
· |
Peppermint – Although, the largest commercial use
of peppermint is in flavoring of chewing gums, its
medicinal properties have also been harnessed to the
fullest to treat problems like halitosis. The essential
oil primarily contains menthol and menthone. Flavonoids
along with the essential oil have very effective
digestive and antispasmodic qualities. Therefore, this
herb is very effective in treating belching, flatulence,
digestive disorders and bloating. It is also used to
prepare mouthwashes to treat oral infections. |
|
· |
Rosemary – This aromatic plant is found
throughout the Mediterranean. Both, its pale blue
flowers as well as leaves are used in treating
dyspepsia, bloating, stomach cramps and constipation.
This herb basically calms the digestion and also
increases the flow of bile which is important in the
digestion of fats. It also has a detoxifying effect on
the lever. In addition to these, rosemary’s expectorant,
anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties make it a
good remedy for treating bronchial, nose and throat
infections which also cause halitosis. |

You should eat plenty of fiber rich foods like raw
vegetables, apples and pear which massage the gums and
keep them healthy. |
|
· |
Ginger, cinnamon, mustard and horseradish are extremely
useful in keeping sinuses in check by acting as
decongestants. Dairy products are best avoided in
sinuses. Remember, sinusitis may be a probable cause of
your halitosis. |
|
· |
You better increase your fluid consumption along with
fiber if
your bowel movements are not smooth. |
|
· |
For counteracting constipation, plenty of fruits and vegetables and extra dose of plain
simple drinking water should do it. Whole meal bread
instead of white one is most preferable in constipation. |
|
· |
Vitamin A and C are required in case your chest
infections are the cause for bad breath. Good sources
include carrots, spinach, broccoli, and citrus fruits.
They all help in protecting the lung tissue. |
|
· |
Fasting or too long an interval between meals also makes
you breath bad. So try to take three meals a day instead
of two. |

|
· |
You should immediately cut down on sweets, sweet drinks
and bakery goods to protect the teeth and gums and
reduce plaque formation. |

|
|
· |
The usual suspects; alcohol, tobacco, onion, garlic and
curry should be immediately put behind bars. |
|
· |
Cheese and spicy deli meats are best avoided. |
|
· |
Myrrh, thyme, eucalyptus and wintergreen based
mouthwashes give temporary relief from halitosis after
the meals. |
|
· |
Food odors can be overcome by chewing dill seeds, coffee
beans, caraway seeds, cardamom, clove, fennel or anise
seeds. Chewing a sprig of fresh parsley rids you of
garlic and alcohol odor. |
|
· |
Inhalation of eucalyptus oil steam gives temporary
relief from sinus. |
|
· |
Rinsing your mouth out often and, swishing and swallowing
after the meals, also rid you of the potentially
offending foods. |
|
· |
Brushing your tongue is as important as brushing your
teeth. Our tongue also harbors plaque and regular
removing of it is very important. |
|
· |
Go for the toothpaste which is tea tree or eucalyptus
essential oil based. |
