At some time in your reproductive life, you've probably experienced heavy bleeding during your menstrual period. If you're like some women, you have heavy periods almost every cycle. Menorrhagia is the medical term for excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding — and for periods that are both heavy and prolonged. The condition is also known as hypermenorrhea (usually when bleeding stays for longer than seven days). It occurs along with other menstrual symptoms such as headaches, cramps, pain, muscle aches, nausea and vomiting. Heavy menstrual bleeding can often be so severe and persistent that your daily routine is disrupted.
The menstrual cycle isn't the same for every woman. The amount of blood lost in each period varies from woman to woman. Normal menstrual flow occurs every 21 to 35 days, lasts four to five days and produces a total blood loss of 30 to 40 milliliters (about 2 to 3 tablespoons). Your period may be regular or irregular, light or heavy, painful or pain-free, long or short and still be considered normal. Women with menorrhagia lose 80 milliliters of blood or soak 16 sanitary products during their menstrual cycle – sanitary products may also be soaked every 2 to 3 consecutive hours.
Menorrhagia can develop in any woman of childbearing age. Although heavy menstrual bleeding is a common concern among premenopausal women, few women experience blood loss severe enough to be defined as menorrhagia. Heavy periods also tend occur more amongst girls when they first start menstruating.
Luckily, there are
few herbal & homeopathic remedies that can together be used to regulate the menstrual cycle
& control the excessive bleeding during periods. Read more

The signs and symptoms of menorrhagia may include:
|
In some cases, the cause of heavy menstrual bleeding is unknown, but a number of conditions may cause menorrhagia. Common causes include:
|
|
|
| |
|
Hormonal imbalance - In a normal menstrual cycle, a balance between the hormones estrogen and progesterone regulates the buildup of the lining of the uterus (endometrium), which is shed during menstruation. If a hormonal imbalance occurs, i.e. the timing or amount of hormones produced by your ovaries becomes abnormal; the endometrium develops in excess and eventually sheds by way of heavy menstrual bleeding. Hormonal imbalance occurs most often in adolescent girls and in women approaching menopause. If menorrhagia is caused by a specific hormonal imbalance, such as thyroid disease, the heavy menstrual flow often can be controlled with hormone medications. However, improper use of hormone medications can also be a direct cause of menorrhagia. |
|

|
| |
|
Uterine fibroids - These noncancerous (benign) tumors of the uterus appear during your childbearing years. Uterine fibroids may cause heavier than normal or prolonged menstrual bleeding. |
| |
|
Endometrial polyps (the endometrium is the inner lining of the uterus) - Small, benign growths on the lining of the uterine wall (uterine polyps) may cause heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding. Polyps of the uterus most commonly occur in women of reproductive age as the result of high hormone levels. |
| |
|
Changes in birth control pills or estrogens that you take |
|
| |
|
Abnormal thyroid or pituitary function |
| |
|
Intrauterine device (IUD) - Menorrhagia is a well-known side effect of using a nonhormonal intrauterine device for birth control. When an IUD is the cause of excessive menstrual bleeding, you'll often need to remove it. |
| |
|
Stress, change in diet or exercise routine, recent weight loss or weight gain, travel, or illness |
| |
|
Pregnancy complications - A single, heavy, late period may be due to a miscarriage. If bleeding occurs at the usual time of menstruation, however, miscarriage is unlikely to be the cause. An ectopic pregnancy — implantation of a fertilized egg within the fallopian tube instead of the uterus — also may cause menorrhagia. like miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy (when a fertilized egg implants somewhere other than the uterus) |
| |
|
Cancer - Rarely, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer and cervical cancer can cause excessive menstrual bleeding. |
| |
|
Medications - Certain drugs, including anti-inflammatory medications and anticoagulants (to prevent blood clots), can contribute to heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding. |
| |
|
Other medical conditions - A number of other medical conditions, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), thyroid problems, endometriosis, and liver or kidney disease, may cause menorrhagia. |
| |
|
Use of certain drugs like steroids or blood thinners (for example, warfarin or Coumadin) |
| |
|
Recent trauma, surgery, or other uterine procedure |
| |
|
Pelvic inflammatory disease or other infection |
| |

Treatment options for menorrhagia are usually determined by the cause of the problem. Over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen may help to decrease blood flow and alleviate menstrual cramps. Your health practitioner may prescribe iron and folic supplements if you are anemic.
Hormonal birth control (low-dose oral contraceptive pill) may help to regulate your menstrual cycle and reduce episodes of excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding. Progesterone therapy may also be recommended if you are experiencing prolonged heavy bleeding. In cases where menorrhagia is severe, surgical options may be required. These procedures include a hysterectomy, endometrial ablation (intense ultrasound waves kill endometrial lining) or dilation and curettage (cervix is dilated and tissue is scraped from the lining of the uterus).
Natural remedies
Herbal and homeopathic remedies are a more natural alternative that can be used to regulate the menstrual cycle. These remedies are gentle and safe for the body’s system without the harsh side effects of conventional medications. Herbs such as
Artemisia vulgaris and Capsella bursa-pastoris help to promote and support menstrual and hormonal health.
Calendula officinalis acts as a menstrual cycle regulator and provides a soothing effect while
Viburnum opulus (Cramp Bark) helps to ease nervous tension and reduce menstrual cramps. In addition, homeopathic ingredients such as Calc. carb, Sepia and Belladonna promote normal menstrual flow and a balanced mood while China encourages healthy levels of iron in the blood and increases energy levels.

Consider these tips for successful self-care of menorrhagia:
Get your rest - Your doctor may recommend rest if bleeding is excessive and disruptive to your normal schedule or lifestyle. And yes, try to make yourself as comfortable as possible.
-
Keep a record - Record the number of pads and tampons you use so that your doctor can determine the amount of bleeding. Make notes of your bleeding and non-bleeding days.
-
Exercise regularly by participating in gentle activities such as walking, yoga or pilates. Of course, this regimen is not applicable on days when you are having this problem.
-
Change tampons or pads regularly, at least every four to six hours.
-
Avoid aspirin - Because aspirin interferes with blood clotting, avoid it. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) often is more effective than aspirin in relieving menstrual discomforts.
-
Try and avoid working in hot places like kitchens.
-
You should also raise the head of your bed by a few inches on the side of the feet.
-
Apply a heat pack or hot water bottle to your lower abdomen or back to relieve cramps
-
Always have an extra supply of sanitary towels and tampons on hand in case of an emergency
-
Soak in a warm bath to release tension and relax muscles
-
Massage lower back with arnica oil or aromatherapy oil to relieve pain.

actually help yourself a lot with heavy menstrual

“Thanks so
much for this product ... After much research on products to
help regulate periods I decided to give it a try. I have had
problems with irregular periods, even having two periods in
one month - since Feb 08. This product works!!! I started
using Mens-Reduce in October and have been very
pleased with the results. The first month I actually had
only one period and it lasted only four days. I am now
pretty regular with a 25, 26 day cycle...Thanks so much.”

“This
product is amazing. My periods have been suddenly irregular
the last few years, culminating with constant blood flow
that would not stop! Literally. I would be on my period all
month. Not the most ideal situation. My doctor put me on
birth control to get it to stop, but I wanted to try
something natural that would work with my body. I tried [Mens-Reduce],
and the first month my period was for a less duration, with
less intensity. By the second month, it was down to a
'regular' time of about 5-7 days. What a relief. Thanks for
making such great products.”

“I often
felt faint and had no energy. I went to my doctor who said
my iron levels were low. I started eating more meat and
foods rich in iron, but wanted to do more… I found your site
and AnemiCare – now I know I am doing all that I can
to support my body! ”
