Tooth Decay
HEALTH HERBS & NUTRITION
- REMEDIES - ALLERGIES - tooth decay

Tooth decay or dental caries, is caused by
bacteria growing on
teeth, especially those bacteria that form a sticky film called
plaque. These bacteria break down sugars and starches in food to
produce acids that dissolve tooth enamel. Even a small cavity in the
tooth can very rapidly lead to tooth decay and once this process
starts, the tooth beneath the enamel rots and the tooth aches badly.
Predominantly, poor dental hygiene and eating too much sugary and
starchy food are the main reasons for tooth decay.

Pulsating and throbbing pain in the tooth all the times. |
|
· |
The affected tooth becomes very sensitive to cold or hot
foods and fluids. |
|
· |
Even cold air makes the tooth ache badly when it rushes
over it. |
|
· |
The tooth hurts while smiling, frowning or moving the
head. |
|
· |
You hurt your tooth while clenching or unclenching your
jaws. |
|
· |
The tooth aches when it comes in contact with sugary or
acidic foods. |

|
· |
Observing poor dental hygiene, like irregular and
improper brushing and flossing is the main reason behind
tooth decay. |
 |
|
· |
Diet plays an important role in exacerbating these
symptoms. Sweets and sugary foods are the main offenders
but definitely not the only one. Starchy food, dried
fruits, acidic fruits like oranges and grapes, |
|
· |
Sticky foods that lodge between the teeth. |
|
· |
Eating mostly soft foods also causes this problem as the
invasion of the bacteria is facilitated. |
|
· |
Very few minerals in the diet lead to poor general
health and hence result into weakened gums and tooth.
The final result is what you already know. |
|
· |
In some cases, stress and even menopause have been
attached with tooth decay. |

Natural and holistic treatments have been used through the ages to
support teeth and gums and provide symptomatic relief. Homeopathic
remedies are safe, effective and gentle to maintain oral health
without being addictive.
Carefully selected homeopathic ingredients such as Acidum
salicylicum, Silicea and Belladonna relieve pain, infection and
inflammation. In addition, Merc sol, Ferrum phos and Hepar sulph
also soothes tooth ache and pain and improves overall dental health.
|
· |
Acidum salicylicum (6C) is used to address
piercing pain as well as sore, red and swollen gums –
often accompanied by foul breath. |
|
· |
Silicea (6X) is used to promote bone health and
when there is sensitivity to cold in the mouth. |
|
· |
Clove – This tall tree doesn’t produce cloves
until the age of 20 years, but then it bears it
continuously for the next almost 50 years. Clove is
basically from the Spice Islands and is extensively
found in South India as well. Clove oil consists of a
substance called eugenol, which gives clove its
characteristic anesthetic, antiseptic, analgesic,
anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal
properties. What more can one ask for in a herb to treat
one’s toothache due to tooth decay? Clove oil is
extensively used and is actually the main constituent of
many herbal mouthwashes and other over-the-counter pain
killers for toothaches. So, buy one and use as per
directions given. Clove oil is has a corrosive effect on
the mucous membranes and hence it is recommended that
you take your herbalist’s advice before treating
yourself with it or its oil. Small quantities of clove
are definitely harmless but its essential oil should not
be taken without permission. |
|
· |
Belladonna (30C) addresses throbbing pain and
inflammation. This remedy is also given to children for
teething pain. |
|
· |
Merc sol (12C) is effective for a wide range of
conditions that are accompanied by profuse, burning, and
an associated sensitivity to heat and cold. |
|
· |
Ferrum phos (6X) suits patients who suffer from
symptoms that are accompanied by low energy and sudden
shooting pain. |
|
· |
Capsicum – It is commonly found in all the
temperate regions of the world. The long thin fruit of
this plant is pepper and is usually green in the
beginning which turns to orange and then finally red in
color. Capsicum peppers contain capsaicin and saponins
which render it with anti-inflammatory and antiseptic
properties. Capsaicin has an additional novel quality of
improving the circulation, thereby promoting healing by
removing toxins from and delivering nutrients to the
affected area. Hence capsicum is used in mouthwashes to
get rid of the pain in the tooth as well as kill the
bacterial infection that resulted in tooth decay. |

The
importance of diet in dental health is not so widely known and that
is precisely the reason why so many dental problems come up at a
very early age. Diet helps to prevent decay by providing fluoride
that makes teeth resistant to decay and other nutrients as well
which are extremely important for healthy teeth and gums.
|
· |
All this starts at a very early age, in effect even
before that. Pregnant women should take plenty of
calcium necessary for forming baby’s teeth. Low-fat
dairy products (low-fat milk, cheese, yoghurt), canned
sardines eaten with their bones, dark green leafy
vegetables and sesame seeds are very good sources of
calcium. Oily fish which provides vitamin D that aids
calcium absorption can also be taken. |
|
· |
Children should be given a mineral rich diet as minerals
are required in the formation of tooth enamel in the
early years. Calcium and fluoride are usually added to
most of the toothpastes these days. Phosphorous is
available from meat, eggs and fish and magnesium can be
found in whole meal bread, bananas and spinach. Vitamin
A, which is also very important for strong bones and
teeth can be found in oranges, carrots and dark green
leafy vegetables in the form of beta carotene, which the
body turns into vitamin A. |
|
· |
Although fresh fruits are acidic in nature, they can be
taken safely as their chewing promotes saliva production
in the mouth which in turn doesn’t allow sugars and
acids to remain in contact with tooth enamel. |
|
· |
Chewing food, any food, to the fullest is very
important. |
|
· |
Certain foods, like cheese protect dental enamel. Cheese
may be taken in the end of a meal as it reduces the acid
level in the mouth. Don’t kill its effect by taking tea
or coffee immediately after the food. |

|
· |
Brush. Brush. Brush. Well do you have another option?
So, clean your teeth a minimum of three times in a day
-
after meals and before kissing goodnight to yourself. |

|
· |
Swishing and flossing become an important activity when
you face this problem of tooth decay. Use a dental floss
or inter-dental brushes once a day. |
|
· |
Switch to the softest-bristled brush you can find to
help preserve gum tissue and prevent further recession. |
|
· |
If you have broken a tooth or have lost a filling, you
can get relief from your pain to some extent by covering
the exposed area with softened chewing gum. To
avoid any further discomfort, avoid chewing anything
with that tooth until you have had it repaired. |
|
· |
Chew a sugar free gum after meals as the extra saliva
produced drains away the acids present in the mouth. |
|
· |
Don’t put your baby to bed with a bottle of milk or
fruit juice. This increase the chances of tooth decay. |
|
· |
If brushing after meals is not possible then at least
rinse your mouth thoroughly, preferably with salty
water. |
|
· |
Try an acupressure technique to stop tooth pain
fast. With your thumb, press the point on the back of
your other hand where the base of your thumb and your
index finger meet. Apply pressure for about 2 minutes.
This shall help to trigger the release of endorphins,
the brain's 'feelgood' hormones. |
