“...[My
doctor] wasn't very pleased when I said I was going to research
natural alternatives, but has had to eat his words because all
his dire predictions did not come true! After my recent check
up, he could not believe that [I] was normal again! I can
recommend Aqua-Rite without reservation. ”

Water retention (also known as edema, dropsy or fluid retention) is
a condition in which some part of the body swells up due to excess
storage of water. Mostly, the parts affected are the limbs, abdomen,
fingers, face and ankles. Some swellings may be temporary like on
fingers and ankles, while others pose much more danger.
Basically, in edema,
large amount of fluid abnormally accumulates in
the spaces between the body's cells or in the circulatory system.
Edema slows down the healing process, increases the chances of
developing skin infection, affects blood circulation and is
generally painful. Edema is a symptom, not a disease or disorder, it
only indicates that something is wrong in the body. Edema is due to
an underlying problem in the body. Widespread, long-term edema can
indicate a serious underlying health problem also.
Conventionally, in the western world, water pills (diuretics) are
prescribed to reduce swelling; but slowly many people are shifting
towards herbal ingredients that not only provide rapid relief for swelling
and improve the blood flow through the veins, but also do
this without any side-effects.

Swelling in the affected areas like lower legs near the
feet, fingers, face, arms and the abdomen. |
|
· |
Swelling due to edema is different from
allergic,
bites
or
obesity in the sense that pressing the area leaves an
indent for some time. |
|
· |
Breathlessness, often while lying down straight on the
bed is also a symptom for water retention. |
|
· |
Sudden change in mental state or coma. |
|
· |
Formation of cankles - an obese or otherwise swollen
ankle that blends into the calf muscle with no clear
definition |
In short, if you notice that the ring on your finger
feels tighter than in the past, or you have difficulty
in putting on shoes, especially toward the end of the
day or the pressure on the skin, such as from the
elastic band on socks is leaving an indentation that
takes time to disappear, take a visit to your doctor as
soon as possible. Edema of the abdomen, called ascites,
is generally a sign of serious underlying disease and
requires a doctor’s visit ASAP.

Certain disorders related to kidney, liver, thyroid
gland and nutrition can cause water retention.
Generally, it is the imbalance of the protein level in
the blood which is held responsible for this condition. |
|
· |
Poor circulation of blood caused by some injury or heart
disease results in reduced blood flow and hence less
displacement of fluids from the tissues. |
|
· |
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) also stirs the same problem
of edema by creating hormonal imbalances. Similarly,
hormonal changes during pregnancy can also cause it. |
|
· |
Allergies to food or
insect bites as also eating highly
salt rich foods |
|
· |
High or
low blood pressure |
|
· |
Sedentary lifestyle including staying in the same
position for long periods is also a general cause. |
|
· |
Infection or injury to a blood vessel, blood clots, or
varicose veins |
|
· |
Blocked lymph channels (lymphedema) |
|
· |
Exposure to high altitudes or heat, especially when
combined with heavy physical exertion |

Treatment involves rectifying the underlying causes of body water
retention. A low dose of diuretic (water pill) may be prescribed to
reduce swelling. In more severe cases of water retention, where the
blood vessels are blocked or damaged, surgery may be required.
If a blocked or damaged blood vessel is suspected as one of the
causes of edema surgery may be needed to improve the flow of blood.
Treating edema should include protecting any swollen, edematous
areas of the body from pressure, injury and extreme temperatures.
The skin over swollen areas becomes more fragile over time. Cuts,
scrapes and burns in areas that have edema take much longer to heal
and are open to infection.
Treating edema with natural and holistic remedies can also
provide rapid relief for swelling and improve the blood flow
through the veins. Using homeopathic and herbal remedies is a safer,
gentler alternative that can improve overall health. Herbs such as
Agathosma betulina (buchu) offer effective diuretic and
anti-inflammatory properties and have been used by the indigenous
people of South Africa for centuries. Taraxacum officinale
(Dandelion) and Olea europea
(extract of olive leaf) help to balance blood pressure, assist
liver and gall bladder functioning and improve circulation.
Together, these 3 herbs are very much capable to:
-
Support routine water balance in cells and organs of the body
- Support healthy energy levels and feelings of well-being
- Maintain blood pressure within normal ranges
- Tone the heart and cardiovascular system
- Support healthy circulation
- Support the heart & maintain regular heart beat
- Soothe the nervous system and common nervous tension
- Support balanced circulation as well as the pressure of the
blood on veins and arteries

Sodium encourages water retention. Hence excess sodium
intake is bad for edema and you should use less salt in
cooking and at the table. Smoked foods such as bacon,
tinned or dried soups and other foods involving
additives should be avoided. |
|
· |
Potassium on the other hand helps to counteract effects
of excess sodium and therefore its intake should be
increased. Its levels are carefully regulated by
hormones and any excess intake results in it being
acting as a diuretic, stimulating the kidneys to produce
more urine and expel waste at a faster pace. Potassium
rich sources basically include plant foods like
avocados, pulses, nuts, dried fruits, tomatoes and
fruits like bananas and oranges. |
|
· |
Other foods (natural diuretics) that help in dispelling
water from the body are horseradish, beetroot, nettle,
celery, asparagus, parsley, grapes, green beans, leafy
greens, pineapple, pumpkin, onion, leeks, and garlic. |
|
· |
Supplements of coumarin, hydroxyethylrutosides, diosmin
and other flavonoids, such as quercetin, rutin, or
anthocyanosides (from bilberry), are also recommended by
doctors in treating or bringing relief to edema
patients. Their effects take a bit more time to show
as compared to the other natural alternatives available
like herbal formulas. |

· |
Your feet should be a little higher than your hips while
resting or sleeping on the bed. The bed can be raised a
few inches at the foot side and if this is too
irritating or not possible then at least a couple of
pillows can be put below the feet. |
|
· |
Walking strengthens the leg muscles making them strong
enough to pump back the excess fluid to the heart. |
|
· |
If you also have congested lungs, then rest your upper
part a little high on the pillows helping out the
kidneys expel urine more frequently. |
|
Practicing good dietary regime & taking some precautions
as discussed above, along with the mentioned herbal
remedies can definitely provide you with the long
awaited & deserved relief from water retention. |
